Madagascar

Madagascar, often referred to as the ‘Eighth Continent’, is home to one of the most unusual mammalian assemblages on Earth. Its exceptional fauna and flora have evolved over millions of years of isolation. Madagascar has a remarkable diversity of habitats and associated flora, covering an area of about 587 000km². It is the world’s fourth largest island (after Greenland, New Guinea and Borneo), yet its variety rivals that of an entire continent!

Apart from the amazing diversity of the island’s mammals, Madagascar is also world renowned for its endemic birds, colorful chameleons and fascinating flora.  Virtually every plant and animal on the island is endemic, but sadly most are threatened by continued deforestation, thus making Madagascar one of those “must-visit-soon” destinations. 

On our scheduled departure we visit the Berenty Lemur Reserve where Xerophytic spiny-forest species include the iconic Ring-tailed Lemur and dancing Verreaux’s Sifaka. While in the rainforests of Perinet we will make a special effort to see our favorite mammal: the huge, singing Indri! Our adventure also takes us to Kirindy Forest where we search out the unique Fosa, the island’s largest carnivore. Ampijoroa is situated in the extensive deciduous forests of the Ankarafantsika Reserve in north-west Madagascar and is a site not to be missed. No less than eight species of lemur occur here, seven of which are unlikely to be seen anywhere else on the island. Ranomafana, which can be visited on our extension, is situated on the eastern slope of Madagascar’s mountainous backbone and spans a wide range of elevations and forest types. Here you can enjoy numerous lemur species from the rare Golden Bamboo Lemur to the tiny nocturnal Brown Mouse Lemur. Night walks also offer the opportunity to see colorful chameleons and strange Leaf-tailed Geckos.
